Are Smithy Upgrades Worth It in Travian: Legends?

The smithy upgrades a unit's attack and defence, compounding about 0.7% of an adjusted base per level up to 20. Whether that's worth the resources depends on how many of that unit you have. Here's the rule of thumb and the maths.

How the upgrade scales

Each smithy level adds a fixed amount derived from the unit's base stat and upkeep, applied on top of the previous level — so the gain per level grows slightly as you climb. Over 20 levels a unit gains roughly 25–35% on its combat value.

Crucially, the upgrade multiplies EVERY copy of that unit. Upgrading is a fixed cost that pays off more the larger your army is.

When to upgrade vs train more

For a small army, the resources are better spent training more troops. For a big, finished hammer or anvil, smithy levels are usually the best resources you can spend — you're buying a percentage boost across thousands of units.

Upgrade the unit you actually field in bulk. Levelling a unit you own ten of is wasted; levelling your main striker or main defender is not.

Before dumping resources into the smithy, compare the cost of the next level against the equivalent in extra troops. The calculators do this for you.
